Eating sweets did not cause your Diabetes
Don’t blame yourself if you have diabetes. You did not eat yourself into having diabetes. That being said, now that you have it, you will need to watch what you eat in order to control your condition.
You did not give yourself diabetes
Diabetes is a genetic disease. Yes even type 2 diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, your risk of developing type 2 diabetes is 1 in 2 if both of your parents have diabetes. However, you can either speed up or stave off the progression of the disease through diet exercise and other lifestyle choices. If you are not predisposed to the disease you are not likely to get it no matter what you eat. There are millions of obese people in the world who will never develop type 2 diabetes. Others will develop diabetes no matter what they eat, or weigh. For instance I was not over weight when I was diagnosed with this disease.
The blame game
All too often I have heard people say “eating excess sweets and processed foods will give you diabetes.” Even some medical professionals still believe this. You can no more give yourself diabetes than you could give yourself Parkinson’s disease or MS or any number of other ailments.
Patients are sometimes treated as though diabetes is somehow their fault, especially if they are overweight, and therefore do not deserve the best medical care. If this happens to you, I urge you to find a more enlightened medical team.
Being fat is a symptom not the cause
If you are insulin resistant your body does not process sugar the way it should. Exercise and eating less will not completely reverse this. Chances are you will need a medication such as metformin to help combat insulin resistance. Excess insulin in you body triggers fat storage weight gain. patients who are over medicated with injected insulin will also gain weight from excess insulin. The key is to watch what you eat and only use enough insulin to keep your blood sugar within range. You cannot eat whatever you want and use insulin to bring your glucose down, or you will ultimately gain weight.
